The integration of sustainable solutions in the value proposition of generation companies in the energy sector responds to new customer demands and to the trend of seeking energy efficiencies thanks to the advance of technological innovation.
Today, the field of behind-the-meter solutions ranges from self-generation to Peak Shaving, a strategy that is gaining relevance in terms of reducing electricity costs for industrial consumers, who are subject to less competitive tariffs.
What is Active Demand Management and what are its benefits?
It is the curtailment of energy demand peaks, which consists of reducing electricity consumption during the period when the maximum demand of the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN) occurs, that is, during peak hours. This allows reducing the costs associated with the power consumed, such as the main transmission toll and power payment, allowing savings in the total electricity bill, especially for industries with large consumption.
Among its main benefits we find:
- Savings in the electric bill.
- Not worrying about limiting your production and taking power at peak hours at a lower cost.
- Substitution of energy consumption from a more polluting generation mix for less polluting energy.
In addition, these solutions support companies in meeting their environmental goals by substituting their energy consumption at times of high demand - associated with sources with high greenhouse gas emissions - with energy from a variety of cleaner generation sources, mitigating their environmental impact by reducing their carbon footprint.
How can customers manage their demand?
There are two ways for customers to manage their demand in the market. These are as follows:
- Changes in their energy consumption patterns, prioritizing the use of electricity during off-peak hours and limiting it during peak hours. For this, it is not necessary to build any kind of electrical infrastructure; it only requires a human team with knowledge of the electricity market to advise customers on how to modify or reorganize their production scheme through different predictive models (software). At Celepsa, we offer intelligent modulation without neglecting the client's operational dynamics through our modern Control Center and a highly trained team.
- The development of an energy storage system (BESS - Battery Energy Storage System), which can be installed in the facilities of customers who are unable to change their electricity consumption pattern due to the characteristics of their production system. In this sense, this system charges the batteries during off-peak hours and discharges the energy during peak hours, allowing to reduce the costs for payment of power and main transmission tolls. This equipment can operate intelligently without human intervention by means of software that predicts the maximum demand of the system, because with a well configured system, it exercises autonomous control. We are currently developing this system for the UNACEM cement plant, which will have a capacity of 1 MW. In addition, we manage all phases of implementation, financing and operation.
